• RFC 1244 -- Site Security Policy
  Security Begins with a risks assessment. The risks assessment should lead to a policy. Haphazard collection, installation, configuration and applications of tools and rules is likely to waste your time and resources and inconvenience your authorized users (employees, contractors, and customers) while it us unlikely to result in a secure system or network. Therefore you should read this IETF draft document for guidelines on creating a security policy for your site.
  This is one of many "RFC" (Request For Comments) documents that form the de facto standards on which the Internet was built. There is a large collection of these at the Ohio State University CIS Information Center
  It's worth reading An Architectural Overview of UNIX Network Security, by Robert B. Reinhardt to get an overview to the terms an concepts that you'll come across as you browse these other sites. This probably isn't the best on-line introduction to Unix security concepts and terminology (and it has NO links even to obvious references), however, it's a good start until I take the time to write something better, or until someone ships me a better suggestion.

  Tempest is the code name for a suite of specifications and tests that are used to harden/certify electronic equipment to prevent leakage of confidential data through the electro-magnetic radiation of your computers, monitors (displays), printers, even your electronic typewriters. It is otherwise possible to reconstruct signals from these sources into fragments of the data that these devices were processing during the monitoring. The equipment that would do this sort of monitoring seems to be generically referred to as "van Eck" hardware -- after the author of some theoretical work on the subject. It's all very spooky stuff).

  MLS (mult-layer security) and CMW (comparted mode workstation) are terms used to refer to military grade security extesions to an operating system (usually Unix). These systems are rarely used by private industry. I'd like to learn more about the pros and cons of MLS/CMW. I read an MLS article by Mike Cerone, an U.S. Air Force officer but it didn't really clarify MLS from a sysadmin's point of view.

Lynx

Lynx is the text mode browser. Current versions can handle frames, most types of imagemaps, and have tolerance for tables (albeit limited). Lynx is very useful to the blind, and to people with limited access to the 'net (particularly those who don't have PPP/GUI access and can only get to a shell account). Sysadmins may find that Lynx's command line features are very useful for certain types of scripting, such as web2mail gateways, cron jobs to verify the integrity of selected pages, and automated update of local mirrors. In addition Lynx can be used as a full hypertext menuing system for shell account users (rare as those are these days).
